I am a student at the University of Georgia, studying International Affairs, Political Science and Philosophy. Located in Athens, GA, UGA is the oldest public school in the US, and the flagship school of Georgia and the South. Many of the students come from Atlanta, bringing metropolitan style and cuisine with them. The rest represent the greater geographical part of Georgia and our Southern neighbor states. The side-by-side of two centuries-old Southern culture with the modern form of nearby Atlanta creates an interesting environment as dynamic as major cities. But, the city itself is only as interesting as its inhabits recognize.
Between my old-world grandparents: Wales and Scotland; my academic studies and study-abroad; and my intense passion for food, style and fashion, I have become obsessed with observing and noting the particular sartorial, epicurean and collegiate quirks that make life interesting. I do find myself somewhat amiss at the complete lack of attention on Southern life. Like any culture, we have our own way about things- frying foods, cuffing pants, wearing brogues and seersucker, enjoying the slow pace of a hot day. All these influence each other, making the South seem alive. I think that it is high time for those of us below the Mason-Dixon line to give a look at our own sense of food, fashion and college; and represent!
